Production of Solid Recovered Fuel from the Rejected Fraction of Recyclable Materials from Waste Picker Cooperatives: A Case Study in Brazil

This study evaluated the feasibility of producing solid recovered fuel (SRF) from rejected waste picker cooperatives (WPC). Three scenarios using different SRF and petroleum coke proportions in cement kilns were assessed. The samples WPC obtained city Florianópolis, Brazil, their physical chemical characteristics determined. Furthermore, avoided atmospheric emissions by replacing conventional with costs to implement a facility estimated. According results, 60.29% could be used for energy recovery. Out materials eligible produce SRF, 75.26% are made up plastic packaging paper. Concerning emissions, direct feeding into clinker kiln contributed reduction 4.83%, 14.73%, 13.37% Scenario 1, 2, 3, respectively. considering two hypothetical industrial plants capacities 522 720 t/day, each ton produced would cost about USD 6.00, representing decrease 35 times when compared coke. Therefore, fraction an alternative waste-to-energy approach.
